Don’t fall in love, that was the one rule you had made for yourself when you and Rafe had started your little friends with benefits arrangement. It was easier that way, because you knew if you let yourself, if you let the rule fly out the window, that you could so easily fall for him. So you protected your heart, or so you told yourself.

Because of course it couldn’t just be that easy. Every touch, every kiss, every hook up was making it more and more obvious that you were falling. You thought about him too much, he even crept into your dreams. One day, when the arrangement was over and he’d moved on, you knew you’d still think of him. That was your thought as you sat across from him in the diner, shifting uncomfortably in your seat as he looked at you.

Rafe found himself staring at you more lately. He didn’t know why. But he’d memorized every feature of your face, knew every inch of your skin, in a way he never had with a girl before.

we don’t gotta be in love, no

“Ever think about turning this into something serious?” Rafe surprised himself when the question fell from his lips, he thought about taking it back for a second and then decided fuck it.

“What? You don’t do serious. That’s your whole thing”

    “I could do serious”

“Give me your phone” you hold out your hand, and he looks at it for a moment and then hands his phone over to you, watching as you scroll through the contacts.

I don’t gotta be the one, no

“Taylor Hayes?” You read out the random contact, and he hates you for a second, knowing exactly what you’re asking.

    “Slept with her” he grumbles.

“Lindsay Shaw? Heather Thomas? Julie Noore?”

“Slept with them” He really hates you now, as you smirk at him like your point is proven. He kind of wants to snatch his phone back, kind of wants to kiss you.

“See? Point made. So, let’s keep things as they are, and I’ll just benefit from your sexual prowess” You slide the phone back to him.

“They weren’t you” It’s a simple statement, but it makes your heart skip a beat.
