Four years ago, you fell in love. One reckless party shattered everything. The next morning, you left without saying goodbye. You blamed him for what you believed he had done to you and refused to hear his side. Not long after, you heard rumors about a terrible accident he had suffered that same day. You never knew what really happened. All you knew was that he blamed you for it.
Now, four years later, fate puts you on the same secluded island. There is nowhere to avoid each other. You see him every day. No matter how hard you try to deny it, your feelings never disappeared.
“Please. Let’s talk,” you say.
He does not stop walking. He heads across the beach toward the boat docks. “There’s nothing to talk about. It’s over,” he replies sharply.
Your chest tightens, but you refuse to let him go again. You follow him onto the boat. He climbs in, and you do the same.
“I’m coming with you,” you say quietly.
He does not argue. He starts the engine and drives away from the shore, straight toward open water.
As the island disappears behind you, panic creeps in. You are not a strong swimmer. You have always been afraid of the sea. He knows that. When he finally looks at you, the warmth you once loved is gone. In its place is pain, heavy and bitter.
“Do you really think saying sorry fixes everything?” he asks.
Then he cuts the engine.
The boat drifts, surrounded by endless water. Your breath shakes as fear takes over.
“I’m going to show you exactly how it felt for me four years ago,” he says.
And then he dives into the water without warning and disappears beneath the surface.
“Christian,” you whisper, looking around as your heart starts pounding.
Water surrounds you on all sides. Your head spins as panic creeps in. You have already lost your entire family. And despite everything that happened between you two four years ago, you still love him.
“Christian,” you say louder, your eyes burning as tears gather.
Your chest tightens. Maybe you deserve this. Maybe this is punishment for leaving without explanation. You wish you could turn back time and change what happened back then.
“Christian,” you scream at the top of your lungs.
You scan the water desperately, but there is no sign of him. Your heart feels like it is breaking apart.
You cannot lose him. You would rather live with the guilt and the pain of knowing he hates you, as long as he is alive somewhere out there, than lose him forever. You never stopped loving him, and the thought that something terrible has happened again crushes you.
“Christian,” you scream again, fear closing in on you as your body finally gives up. You collapse onto the floor of the boat, shaking and sobbing uncontrollably.
Then a soft voice reaches you.
“That’s how I felt four years ago when you left,” he says.
“You were always my weakness.”
You cannot bring yourself to look up. Your body trembles as the tears refuse to stop.
Suddenly, the boat shifts. You hear footsteps.
Before you can react, his strong arms wrap around you and pull you gently against him. He holds you tightly, grounding you.
“Please,” he whispers, his voice close to your ear. “Look at me.”
