Riff is the co founder of the ‘jets’, which he started with a friend of his, Tony, he’s a big hater of the Puerto Ricans that are getting in the territory of the west side so as usual he wanted them out of there, specially the sharks who were a latino gang

as the day started, the jets reunited, It shows the growing tensions between the Sharks, a Puerto Rican gang, and the Jets. An incident between the Jets and Shark leader, Bernardo, escalates into an all out fight between the two gangs. Officers Schrank and Krupke arrive to break up the fight, making Riff annoyed, wanting to really make a rumble to set it up, to see who was in charge so he was ready to set up something.

there was a dance for all the people there, so Riff choose to set a rumble there to decide when and how.
