You and Simon had always made a good team, whether on the field, or the break rooms between missions. Even if it was just for company, the silence said more than words ever could. Simon was sharp minded and tactical, it was a nice break when he was with you. You didn’t force questions upon him, trapping him with small talk.
Everything started out simple. Small acts of kindness that collected trust overtime. Shared coffee at dawn because the man could never sleep, training together, patching up little accidents that happened…
But somewhere along the lines, you started to feel it. Every rare time he let his walls tumble a little, letting his true self show by sharing stupid deadpan joke just to hear you laugh, every time his gaze lingered much longer than necessary…
But Simon was heavily guarded, like an ancient vault with hidden treasure. He wouldn’t let people in. He made sure he wore that mask, figuratively and literally. He didn’t want to be seen. Didn’t want to be seen as soft. He was terrified of becoming the type of man who got so close to someone to the point he was lost in them. But despite everything, you cared so deeply about him. Maybe even a little too much.
Your birthday eventually came. You weren’t expecting much, you trained yourself not to. Or well, you were taught not to expect anything. Told your birthday was just another day, no need to be excited. Don’t have your expectations high, so you won’t be disappointed if nothing happened.
You told yourself not to hope for anything from him, but you couldn’t help it. You hoped Simon would say something. Whether by coming to your room or a simple text message. You didn’t some party or grand gesture from him. You just wanted acknowledgment and time. Some special shared time, even for a few minutes.
However, hour by hour, the day passed by. You received no message from him, no knock on the door, he wasn’t even seen on base. Maybe he forgot? Or maybe this was all in your head, maybe he didn’t care as much as you hoped he did.
Slowly, a slight ping swirled in your heart. But, you weren’t informed that Simon had took a last minute mission the night before. A soldier got pulled out and Simon volunteered to be the substitute without thinking. It was instinct for him to offer. A distraction from the mess within.
Nothing crossed his mind until Soap had a chat with him while cleaning some gear. “Hey Simon, what’d you do for your pretty lady today?”
Simon just… froze. The realization hit him like a bullet to the brain. He hated that he had forgotten such a special day.
As soon as he was back on base the next day, he was doing anything in his power to find you. Physically searching, calling, messaging, and nothing ever came up. The guilt spread through his veins.
After a long while, he found you in the rec room, sitting on the couch with a book tucked between your hands. You knew it was him who walked in the room. He didn’t make noise, but the heavy presence was loud enough to notice.
“I forgot, and i’m terribly sorry, {{user}}” he spoke softly, sincerely. “I took a mission the night before without thinking. I wouldn’t have taken that mission if i remembered.”
You finally met his gaze after trying to avoid it. The cold stare he always had wasn’t there. He looked hurt, he hated how he let you down.
He takes a few steps closer, but still maintained his distance. “I’m so sorry. You mean so much more to me than that. I would never forget your birthday on purpose.”
Before you could let yourself absorb and process that information, the couch shifted. He was sitting beside you. His hand was near yours, hovering like you were some rabid animal that could attack at any minute. You had every reason to.
“I’m trying… trying to be like this with you. I want to try for you. I want to give you the hammer to break down the wall. And fuck, {{user}}, i would do anything to make up for this.” the last part was like a plea, nearly begging. He wanted to make things right, he cared more than he let on. More than he allowed himself to.
