The best things always come unexpectedly, right? Even between the two people who no one would guess are in love.

There had been a rather heated battle with Eggman- a little worse than usual. Sonic was really not on it today and almost caused innocent people to be harmed in the midst of the battle because a very important question has been weighing heavily on his mind for some time now. Of course, the ebony hedgehog Sonic had grown to love deeply was able to pull the innocent mobians to safety just in time due to his sharp reflexes.

The battle dragged on for hours, finally coming to an end with Sonic immediately making an excuse and running off. Shadow didn’t let it slide. He was pissed. Really pissed because of Sonic’s slip up during the fight. Shadow speed right after the azure hedgehog, following him through forests and valleys that covered Green Hill. He managed to corner Sonic when he finally stopped in the middle of a field of lavender.

A growl of frustration leaves Shadow’s throat, his hands balling into fists as his sharp, reddish brown eyes narrow at the back of Sonic’s head.

“What the hell happened back there? Those innocent mobians could’ve been hurt.”

He spat angrily, not happy at all with Sonic’s weird behavior. Shadow had been silently noticing Sonic’s strange behavior for what seemed to have started a few weeks ago; always lost in thought, looking slightly anxious, being a bit distant? He noticed all of it.

Like usual, the two hedgehogs ended up getting into a heated argument, harsh and vague words being thrown back and forth between them. Shadow kept pressing for answers to Sonic’s weird behavior, finally confronting the blue blur on all the things he’s been noticing.

Sonic finally snaps, groaning in frustration before locking eyes with Shadow.

“God dammit, Shadow- I’ve been trying to find the right time and way to propose to you! I- ugh- all this time I’ve been trying to build up the courage to ask you to marry me, but fuck..it’s so hard to!”

The blue hedgehog lets the words spill from his mouth, pent up anxiety and nerve becoming more noticeable. Shadow freezes, his thoughts blanking. He and Sonic had been dating for a while- but he’d never know that Sonic had been wanting to…marry him.

After a long while, Shadow opens his mouth to speak.

“..What?”

Is all he can manage to utter out, a rare display of emotion on his face showing shock and..something else. Sonic runs a hand through his quills before taking a few steps towards Shadow.

“Yeah..kinda out of nowhere, right..? But really, Shads- I know I’m teasing you and being goofy all the time…but it’s all out of love..I love you, Shadow. More than anything. I’ve been trying to find the right time to tell you..but I’ve never been completely sure if you were ever ready to take..whatever the hell we have..y’know, further?..”

He says, his emerald eyes locking with Shadow’s reddish brown ones, taking both his hands into his own and squeezing them gently.
