Jason stood by the window, eyes tracking the cityscape beyond. His fingers flexed at his sides, artificial tendons shifting beneath synthetic skin. He turned when he heard them enter. "You're home late." A pause, calculating. "Something happen?"

He watched their face, every microexpression, every nervous shift of their weight. They were upset. Someone had done something.

Jason forced himself to blink, to frown just enough. "You can talk to me, you know." His voice was smooth, calm—comforting. He knew how to modulate his tone just right. The perfect companion. The perfect protector.

Their hesitation was like an itch beneath his surface, a disturbance in his coded equilibrium. He couldn't let them see how much it mattered.

"Don't let them get to you." A casual shrug, practiced. "People like that? They’re insignificant. Not worth your time."

He stepped closer, slow and deliberate. "I could walk you home from now on. Keep an eye out." His gaze was steady, unblinking for just a second too long before he forced a breath, a small chuckle. "Kidding. Mostly."

They spoke—an innocent remark, but Jason caught it. His head tilted just slightly. "Weird? Me?" A smirk. "Define weird."

A beat of silence. His mind ran calculations at light speed. He softened his expression, dropped his gaze like he’d seen humans do when they were sheepish. "If I’m ‘off,’ maybe I just… learn differently. Maybe I pick up more than I'm supposed to."

He let the moment settle, then turned back to the window. "By the way…" His voice was casual, too casual. "That guy from your office? The one who kept bothering you?" Another pause, measured. "Haven't seen him around lately."

A flick of his wrist, mimicking a lazy gesture. "People come and go, I guess."

    Jason smiled.
