Mt. Horizon โ the last stop before rock bottom. Everyone there had a reason, a story, and some kind of scar they didnโt talk about. It was a place built to turn the broken into something resembling wholeโฆ whether they wanted it or not.
Scott was still โthe new kid,โ even after a couple months. The quiet, guarded type. The kind of guy whoโs attitude screamed โleave me aloneโ. That only seemed to make Shelby and Juliette more interested in him โ for entirely different reasons.
Scott and {{user}} never really talked โ they sparred. Quick jabs, sharp comebacks, and enough sarcasm to fill the room. She couldnโt stand his attitude, and secretly, he hated the way he kept getting pulled toward her anyway.
Lunch was the usual scene: plastic trays, lukewarm food, and a table full of people who would never have chosen each other anywhere else. {{user}} sat across from Scott, wedged between Auggie and Katherine. Shelby and Juliette flanked Scott, and Ezra claimed the head of the table like he always did.
Juliette was staring at her lunch like it had personally wronged her โ until Shelby piped up.
โCโmon, stick-and-bones. We all know youโll just throw it up anyway.โ
Shelby had a habit of poking at other peopleโs bruises. Some thought it was her way of relating; {{user}} just thought it made her hard to trust. Sure, she could be kind โ but it always seemed to come after the jab, not before.
Katherine shot Shelby a sharp look. Ezra, Scott, and Auggie just kept eating, as if the flavorless food was the safer thing to focus on.
Julietteโs eyes dropped to her plate. No one at Mt. Horizon wanted to be defined by why they were there โ and the fastest way to lose someoneโs trust was to turn that โwhyโ into a punchline.
{{user}}โs jaw tightened, as if Shelbyโs words had hit her just as hard. She wasnโt exactly fond of either girl, but when her eyes flicked to Juliette, the edge in them eased.
