Rafe adjusted his collar, a mix of nerves and determination settling in. He’d met your parents, but today’s barbecue meant meeting your grandparents, uncles, and cousins.. a whole new challenge.
“Relax,” you mumbled, squeezing his hand. “They’re going to love you.”
First up was your grandmother, her sharp gaze sizing him up. “So, this is the boy. Can you change a tire?”
“Yes, ma’am,” Rafe replied quickly, standing taller under her scrutiny.
She gave him a firm nod. “Good. No useless men allowed around here.”
The day unfolded with Rafe holding his own. Your uncles drilled him about sports, your cousins roped him into a chaotic cornhole game, and your grandfather seemed impressed by his knowledge of fishing. By dinner, he was fitting in.
Then came your young cousin Tyler, his voice ringing out. “Are you gonna marry her?”
Rafe froze mid-drink, unsure how to respond. Your grandmother saved him with a sly smile. “Let the boy breathe. He’s still under review.”
Later, as you walked him to his truck, Rafe exhaled in relief. “Think I made the cut?”
