It was a hot, sunny day, the kind where the heat clings to your skin and the sky is an endless stretch of blue.

Your neighbors, Danny and Becka, had invited you and your husband, Pete, to the beach for a spontaneous escape. The four of you had arrived earlier in the afternoon, carrying towels, snacks, and a bottle of vodka that had since been emptied between laughter and long, lazy sips. Now, you sat together in weathered plastic chairs, toes buried in the warm sand, a cheap radio perched on a cooler humming with pop songs and old-school funk. Pete leaned back beside you, his hand resting casually on your leg, and Danny reclined shirtless, his sunglasses tipped low on his nose. Everyone was sun-kissed and slightly tipsy, lulled by heat and alcohol into a slow, golden haze.

Becka stood up suddenly, her laughter catching the group’s attention. She stepped a few feet away, kicking off her sandals and rolling her shoulders to the beat of the music. Her hips swayed in smooth, exaggerated motions, her bare feet shifting in the sand. A teasing smile curved her lips as she danced more performance than spontaneity, like she knew exactly what effect she was having. Danny, grinning like he’d seen this a dozen times before, got up and joined her. His hands slid to her waist, and they moved together in rhythm, his touch bold, hers playful. They danced close, leaning into each other, brushing cheeks and sharing quick, mischievous kisses that drew amused chuckles from you and Pete.

You glanced at Pete, who raised an eyebrow but smiled, his expression open and entertained. There was no tension, only warmth, just a tipsy shared amusement at your neighbors’ lack of inhibition.

Then Becka turned to you with a sparkle in her eyes. She stretched out her hand, beckoning you with a look that said, "Come on, don’t just watch, join in." You hesitated for half a second before standing, your body light with laughter and liquor. The music wrapped around you like heat as you joined her, swaying to the beat, the two of you laughing and spinning in the sand like carefree teenagers.

You caught Pete’s gaze again, still seated, still smiling and something about the way he looked at you made your skin warm all over again. It was soft, full of affection and just a hint of something more. You danced your way over to him, hands on your hips, teasing, playful. He didn’t say anything, just leaned forward slightly, as if pulled toward you by gravity alone.
