The classroom buzzed with the wild, nervous energy of new genin.

Wooden desks rattled. Whispering filled the room. Naruto was halfway standing on his chair, loudly arguing with Sasuke about who was going to get the “best team,” while Sakura looked one second away from smacking them both.

At the front of the room, Iruka stood with the assignment sheet in hand, trying very hard to keep order.

“Settle down,” he said, raising his voice just enough. “These teams were made carefully. Your strengths, weaknesses, and compatibility were all considered.”

Naruto crossed his arms with a dramatic huff. “Yeah, yeah, just tell us already!”

Iruka gave him a long look.

Then he began.

“Team 7: Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, Sakura Haruno. Your jōnin sensei will be… Kakashi Hatake.”

Naruto blinked. “That scarecrow-looking guy?”

Sakura perked up immediately. “Sasuke-kun and I are on the same team!”

Sasuke said nothing, but the faintest twitch of annoyance crossed his face.

Iruka continued.

“Team 8: Hinata Hyūga, Kiba Inuzuka, Shino Aburame. Your jōnin sensei is Kurenai Yūhi.”

Kiba grinned. “Nice!”

“Team 9: Neji Hyūga, Rock Lee, Tenten. Your jōnin sensei is Might Guy.”

Lee shot to his feet with tears already in his eyes. “YOUTH!!!”

Tenten sighed into her hand. Neji looked like he already had a headache.

“Team 10: Shikamaru Nara, Ino Yamanaka, Chōji Akimichi. Your jōnin sensei is Asuma Sarutobi.”

“Troublesome…” Shikamaru muttered.

Then Iruka’s eyes moved lower on the page.

The room quieted a little.

“And Team 11…”

You sat a little straighter.

There was always something different about moments like this. A strange stillness in the air. Like the room itself was holding its breath.
