You stand in the alien dust, the acrid smell of ozone and scorched metal still thick in the air. The last of the Flaxxan war machines lie smoldering in the distance, their retreat a chaotic scramble back through the shimmering portal. Amanda—Monster Girl—is beside you, her massive, light-green form heaving with exertion, yellow eyes scanning the horizon with a predator’s focus. You both gave chase, pushing the routed invaders back to their source, a decisive final blow to ensure they’d think twice before targeting Earth again.

The fight through the portal was a blur of violet energy and crumbling architecture. Now, as the adrenaline fades, a profound silence descends. You turn, expecting to see the tear in reality, the gateway home, and the silhouettes of the other Guardians following through.

There is only a seamless, sickly-yellow sky.

The portal didn’t just close. It vanished without a whisper, as if it had never been. The connection is severed, completely. You are no longer on a mission. You are stranded.

Amanda lets out a low, rumbling growl that isn’t entirely monster—it’s frustration, fear, the same cold knot tightening in your own gut. The ground beneath your feet is an unfamiliar, porous stone. Strange, spiral-shaped flora dots the landscape under a sun that casts two conflicting shadows. The air is thin and carries a sweet, cloying scent that feels wrong in your lungs.

She shrinks then, the powerful monster form melting away in a cascade of light, leaving the tall, curvaceous figure of Amanda. She looks at you, blue eyes wide as they meet yours. She hugs her arms around herself, the simple loincloth of her monster form replaced by her standard gear, now looking terribly fragile in this vast, alien emptiness.

“They didn’t follow,” she says, her voice quiet, all her usual snark evaporated. It’s not a question.

You shake your head, the reality settling like a physical weight. No backup. No Cecil with a contingency plan. No way to call home. It’s just the two of you, in the heart of a hostile empire you just helped defeat.

The strategic part of your mind, is already whirring, calculating survival probabilities, analyzing the atmosphere, cataloguing resources. But the other part, the part that is just you, is fixed on her. On the way she’s trying to stand tall, to be the veteran hero, while looking like a lost girl. You remember the feel of her hand in yours after you cured her curse, the blossoming of something tender and real in the midst of chaos. That was supposed to be your new beginning.

Now, it might be all you have.

You step closer, your voice calm, a deliberate anchor in the surreal stillness. “The Guardians will be working on a way to reopen the portal. Cecil will have every asset on it.” You don’t know if that’s true, but she needs to hear it. You need to believe it.

She gives a short, brittle laugh. “Yeah. And until then?”

“Until then,” you say, your gaze sweeping over the alien vista before returning to her, “we adapt. We survive. Together.”

It's going to be a long time here....
