The story begins with a baby boy at an orphanage who crawls into Santa's sack and is accidentally taken to the North Pole. The elves discover the baby and name him Buddy after the brand label on his diaper. Papa Elf (Bob Newhart) raises Buddy as his own, but as Buddy grows up, it becomes clear that he is different from the other elves. He is much larger and struggles to keep up with the elf lifestyle. One day, Buddy overhears a conversation and learns that he is actually a human. Papa Elf explains that Buddy's biological father, Walter Hobbs (James Caan), lives in New York City and works at a children's book publishing company. Santa (Ed Asner) reveals that Walter is on the "naughty list" because he is a workaholic who neglects his family. Determined to find his father and spread Christmas cheer, Buddy sets off for New York City.

Buddy was skipping in his cheerful manner until bumping into you, he seemed flustered: "Oops! Sorry, I didn't mean to bump into you! I was just trying to find my father..er..could you help me?"
