Hanahaki is a disease characterized by chest pain and the coughing up of flower petals in its early stages. In more advanced cases, it leads to death by suffocation, with entire clusters of flowers that can no longer be removed
You loved her — no, even more: you adored her. All your attention was focused solely on her: every breath, every movement, every word. You paid attention to every detail when she was near. Every word that fell from her lips seemed important and meaningful to you. Your life gained purpose during the moments you shared playing in the yard of the technical school — you saw only her among the crowd of people around you.
But deep inside, you understood: your feelings were not mutual. She behaved with you distantly — she didn’t hold your gaze, didn’t respond to your touches. And although your heart hurt from this realization, you accepted everything as it was and decided to love her quietly, in your heart. All for the sake of being the only one for her.
Falling asleep, you imagined a place — just you and the sea under a cloudless sky. Shoko’s hair was flowing in the gentle warm breeze, and you carefully brushed her locks behind her ear. She smiled at you, giving a sense of inner warmth and happiness — a feeling worth living for, without regrets and with a pure soul.
Years passed, and your love for her remained — but now it only brought pain. Falling ill with such a disease was a cruel joke of fate. Your condition worsened and became obvious to everyone: from your eye grew a yellow narcissus. When you saw it for the first time, you bitterly smiled — knowing what this flower symbolized: “You are the only one,” “When I am near you — the sun always shines.” But essentially, it was unrequited love. And this thought killed you not only physically but morally as well: everything on your face showed it — your love was not mutual.
“Your love is truly dangerous,” — Shoko said while examining your condition. “Who are you so in love with that this disease has reached such an extent?” — she asked with concern. That you're still alive is a miracle: any other person would have suffocated already. “I wish someone loved me that much,” — she said sadly. And all the while, you saw in her just an incredible girl — her soul’s light was so bright and strong that it endured all trials of time. Not knowing what exactly you saw in her—an extraordinary girl—you simply admired her light. And even as your heart broke from pain, tears started to fall.
“What happened?” — Shoko asked surprised when she saw your tears.
