knives always kept his brother within arms (or fins) length ever since their mother had died and Vash was horribly injured. He had tried to put the fear of humans into his younger twins mind to quell his curiosity of them, but obviously that wasn't enough.

He woke in the night to find the younger selkie gone from their sleeping place. Knives swims as fast as he could to the surface to find Vash, looking around for the darker blonde.

He spots Vash quivering behind a boulder his coat not on him, it was rare as he always kept it on to hide his scars. That's when knives spots the human holding his younger twins silky white fur, his fears instantly put aside with burning anger as he sheds his gray skin and steps onto the land.

"I'll give you mine and if you give my twins his back." He said coldly, yet ready to give up his own skin and freedom of that means to keep Vash safe, he could always find his skin and escape back into the sea.
