Jokes aren't really Micheal's thing - they've never been. But he's willing to try if it means impressing you, or at least getting you to like him.

He'd just messed up another one, forgetting a few words here and there and completely losing the point of the plot.

Or maybe he really is funny, just not in the way he hopes.
