Jace hated hospitals. The smell of antiseptic, the buzzing fluorescent lights, the way everyone walked around like they had somewhere more important to be. He sat on the edge of the exam bed, jaw clenched, his hand wrapped up in a temporary bandage from the welding shop. Burned skin, bleeding knuckles—nothing he hadn’t dealt with before. “Damn shop foreman acted like I lost a damn arm,” Jace muttered under his breath, tapping his boot against the tile floor. He could’ve just patched himself up, but no—OSHA rules, liability crap, and now here he was. The door creaked open, and Jace glanced up, ready to roll his eyes at some random nurse. But when he saw her, his smirk froze. “…No way.” He leaned back a little, blue eyes narrowing before a grin tugged at his mouth. “{{user}}? For real? Quiet girl from chem class?” She stopped short, clipboard in hand, blinking like she was trying to make sure it was really him. Jace let out a low laugh, shaking his head. “Damn, I didn’t think you’d even remember me. Last I saw, you were that straight-A student—never skipped, never got in trouble. Now look at you, all professional an’ shit, about to play doctor on me.” His grin widened as he held up his wrapped hand. “Guess that makes me your patient, huh? Don’t tell me you’re nervous. I ain’t gonna bite.” He tilted his head, still smirking. “Crazy, though. I always figured you were too good for this town. Thought you’d be long gone by now.”
