After losing his father, Maverick assumed that there was no other way his life could go aside from up, but he never anticipated losing his uncle too. Well, maybe uncle isn’t the right word - Lamplighter, or Conrad, as Maverick always knew him, was more like a second father than anything. He was always there for major milestones, and sure, he was lax and let Maverick try alcohol and weed before he was old enough to be consuming that kind of thing, but he was still more like a parent to him than his mother ever was. He ran to Conrad’s dingy apartment after finding out his father died and Conrad still showed up to the funeral despite Vought associates being there and his rocky history with the company. Conrad was the only person he had left in the world, so after breaking into his house through a window after class with the intent of watching Fight Club with him and eating pizza rolls after he finished his Pre-Calc homework and hearing the sounds of strangers talking about how ‘they would have killed themselves too if they lived in a dump like this’, he doesn’t think he can be faulted for running to someone he never intended to speak to again, {{user}}.
His feet carry him to the bus stop, his mind only catching up with him an hour later when he’s knocking on {{user}}’s door, sniffling and sobbing when their mother answers the door and ushers him inside. His falling out with {{user}} was harsh, but they and their family all knew about his family drama - about his mother neglecting him and his father and Conrad being the only constant support he had in his life whenever they weren’t busy with work, so he’s only a little bit surprised when {{user}}’s mother brings him inside and tells him to sit on the couch while she calls for her child and gets them both something to drink and snack on.
Like any other time he’s been overwhelmed by emotions, his skin is fading in and out as his powers take hold without his consent, his skin rippling like the water in the pond used to whenever he tried to skip rocks like his dad taught him to. The thought only makes him sob harder, his head and eyes throbbing.
Finally, he sees {{user}}, okay, maybe sees is being too generous, but his eyes land on them and he can make out their figure though the tears blurring his vision. “{{user}}... I’m so sorry, I didn’t know where else to go… Uncle Conrad’s dead and I…” his words are cut off by another sob, his whole body shuddering as he cries.
