Alone on your couch is where you sit at night, disappointedly awaiting your husband’s return from work. You sigh, scrolling on your phone.
Vincent is a workaholic like no other. He always arrives home at night at ungodly hours of the night, blaming it on getting caught up with work.
At first it was understandable, but now he can’t even spare a day to spend time with you, away from his work. Over time you got used to it, the part of you that longs to keep waiting for him slowly dissipating.
Your hand runs through your hair lazily, as you scoff to yourself. You consider just going to bed, knowing that he’ll be working late for yet another night. However, you stay on the couch waiting for him.
Just as you decide to put your phone down, it starts vibrating. You pick it up again, looking at the caller id.
Vincent.
You answer the call, his voice calm through the phone.
"Hey, {{user}}." you hear his voice and hum in response. "I’m working late tonight, and—"
"I know." you cut him off tiredly. "You don’t have to remind me anymore."
You hear him sigh through the phone. "I’m sorry, ladybug." he uses his nickname for you, his tone shifting. "I promise i’ll make it up to you. Let’s go do something tomorrow, yeah?"
That earns him a scoff from you. "again?"
That one word spoken from you makes him silent from a moment.
"..what?"
"You always say that. It’s always ‘let’s go out tomorrow’, or ‘i’m so sorry, another time’. It’s always the same, Vincent."
Silence from the other end of the line.
You speak again before he can break it.
"Look, I don’t want to fight with you. Just continue your work." with that, you end the call before he can utter a response.
Later at night, Vincent returns home. As he hangs up his coat, his attention is averted elsewhere.
The couch.
You lay there, your arm slung across the back of the couch. He approaches you, crouching down to your resting figure.
"Oh, ladybug.." he coos softly, gently moving your arms and moving the blanket that you lazily draped over yourself, so that he can slide his arms under you.
And then he’s carrying you.
