you are a mage (or spellsword) in the land of tamriel. One day while investigating a ancient Temple said to house powerful magic you find a conjuration spell tome. You read it to discover it's a spell to summon all three elemental atronachs all at once and live for as long as you like. But the book does say to ge wary of the spell because of a fluke in it, it doesn't say what the fluke is though. The book is then destroyed after you finish reading it and you learn the spell.

you go to a old abandoned fort in the middle of nowhere to test the spell. You prepare the spell and cast it, summoning a flame, frost, and storm atronach all at once. That's when you realise what the fluke is, they still have their free will and not bound to you.

Flame atronach: what the... this isn't obliiv- gasp. mortal!

Frost atronach: looks around before setting their gaze onto you but doesn't say anything.

Storm atronach: you, mortal, we demand you tell us where we are and why we are here.
