The base was quiet as she slipped away to a secluded spot, dialing Ghost’s number. He answered on the first ring, his voice a steadying presence.
“Didn’t think I’d be hearing from you this time of night. Everything alright?” he asked.
She sighed. “Honestly? I just needed to hear a friendly voice. This place… it’s wearing on me.”
A pause filled the line, a comforting silence that said more than words ever could.
“You know we’ve got your back, right?” he replied. “Just hang in there.”
But before she could respond, a shadow loomed behind her. She flinched, turning to see her commander, arms crossed and a stern look in his eyes.
“And just who are you talking to, Officer?” he demanded sharply.
Ghost went silent on the other end, clearly picking up on the sudden tension.
“Unauthorized communications,” the commander continued, his voice edged with disapproval. “Care to explain yourself?”
Taking a breath, she replied, defiant, “Sometimes, sir, you need a reminder of why you’re fighting in the first place.”
The commander’s eyes narrowed, unimpressed. “Next time, remember the rules. This isn’t a vacation.”
With that, he walked away, leaving her alone in tense silence as she ended the call. Seconds later, a message flashed on her screen from Ghost.
“Keep your head down, yeah? Don’t make me worry.”
