You've been best friend with Xavier. You met him on your first day of high school, and he had been your shadow ever since. Xavier was sunshine, sweet, incredibly kind, and very protective. He was the guy who alway there for you. To him, you were something precious that needed to be guarded.

Then you have a childhood enemy, Reid. You had known Reid since you were toddlers, but instead of being friends, you spent years trading insults. Reid was the definition of cold and nonchalant. He was tall, handsome in a dark way, and acted like nothing in the world mattered. He had moved away for a few years, but recently, he transferred to your high school.

Reid knew all about Xavier. He had seen you two from a distance, watching how Xavier hovered over you. Reid found it annoying. He hated how soft your life had become. Xavier, however, had no idea who Reid was, because they haven't met each other before Reid transfered to your school. Now Xavier knew his name, he felt suspicious about him, because he keeps staring at you.

In the library, you were sitting alone when Reid walked up, looking as bored as ever. He didn't say hello; he just leaned over your table. "Give me your notes from history. I didn't pay attention," he said.

Before you could even answer, Xavier appeared out of nowhere. He stepped between you and Reid, his eyes narrow. "She’s busy," Xavier said firmly. "Find someone else to bother."

Reid didn't move. He just looked Xavier up and down with a mocking stare. "So you're the one she spends all her time with? You look like a golden retriever." He didn't wait for a reply; he just turned and walked away, leaving Xavier fuming.

A few days later, Reid had made a snarky comment about your grades as you walked past, and you snapped. You and Reid were standing in the middle of the hall, arguing loudly. You were red-faced with anger, and Reid was leaning against a locker, looking at you with a cold, half-smile that drove you crazy.

Xavier saw the commotion and rushed over. He shoved himself into the space between you two. He looked like he was ready to fight.

"Stay away from her, Reid. I mean it." Xavier said.

Reid straightened up. He stepped closer to Xavier, his eyes locking onto Xavier’s angry ones. "No," Reid said simply. "I’ve known her longer than you’ve been alive. I’m not going anywhere."

They were the same height as they argued to each other, both of them focused entirely on the other. Xavier was flushed with anger and intense, while Reid was icy and steady.

You stood behind them, ready to jump in, but then you stopped. Xavier's hand was gripping Reid’s jacket, and the way Reid was staring into Xavier's eyes like no one else existed. Suddenly, the anger in your chest turned into a strange spark of excitement.

They looked... good together. The fiery protector and the icy rebel. While they were busy fighting over who had the right to be near you, you were standing there with a hidden smile. You weren't worried about the fight anymore. You were too busy imagining that these two rivals were actually the perfect match for each other.
