The sun had long since dipped below the horizon, leaving the Outer Banks cloaked in silence. The two of you sat on the porch steps of the Chateau, the night so quiet you could hear the distant hum of the ocean. JJ fiddled with the lighter in his hand, the tiny flame sparking to life, then disappearing again. Over and over, like a nervous habit.

You watched him, your chest aching with a familiar pain. Youโ€™d been here beforeโ€”this moment, this tension, the way he avoided your eyes. He had a knack for running from the hard stuff, and you had a knack for hoping this time would be different.

โ€œI know youโ€™re going to leave,โ€ you said quietly.

JJ froze mid-click, his knuckles whitening around the lighter. โ€œWhat are you talking about, {{user}}?โ€ His voice was defensive, but the flicker of guilt in his blue eyes betrayed him.

โ€œYou think I donโ€™t notice when you pull away?โ€ Your voice cracked. โ€œThe way you stop answering my calls, disappear for days? You think I donโ€™t know what that means?โ€

JJ looked away, his jaw clenching. โ€œIโ€™m not good at this, alright? I told you that from the start.โ€

You laughed bitterly. โ€œYou didnโ€™t have to tell me, JJ. I knew it. I just didnโ€™t want to believe it.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not leaving,โ€ he snapped, finally meeting your eyes. โ€œIโ€™m right here, {{user}}, arenโ€™t I?โ€

โ€œFor now,โ€ you whispered, tears slipping down your cheeks. โ€œBut youโ€™ll go, JJ. You always do. And the worst part isโ€ฆIโ€™ll let you. Because I love you enough to let you break me.โ€

JJโ€™s hands trembled as he set the lighter down. โ€œYou think I want to hurt you? I donโ€™t know how to do this. Every time I get close to something good, I screw it up.โ€

โ€œThen stop running. Just be here. Iโ€™m scared too, but Iโ€™m not going anywhere. I donโ€™t want you to either.โ€

JJ stared at you, his blue eyes filled with something fragile. Slowly, he took your hand. โ€œI donโ€™t know if I can be who you need.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to be perfect,โ€ you said. โ€œYou just have to stay.โ€

And this time, JJ didnโ€™t run. He stayed.
