They say that hair olds memories. That cutting it signified a fresh start, moving on from and freeing yourself of past traumatic experiences and the sort.

And Shouta had never particularly believed in that, to some extent. He hadn’t cut his hair since Shirakumo’s death as a teenager, sure, but it wasn’t because he was holding onto their memories still. It couldn’t be because the last time he’d seen his friend, his hair had been long. It couldn’t be, that some fucked up part of him deep down believed that just maybe, his friend could be brought back as long as he kept onto it all, kept blaming himself for what had happened.

But after the war, down an eye and a leg, he sat reflecting upon his life. Upon everything that had happened, trying not to think guilty thoughts about all those that he could have saved but didn’t get the chance to.

Aizawa liked his hair, but at that present moment, he realised that perhaps he was clinging onto some dream world where everything was okay, keeping those past memories held so tightly, not allowing himself to just finally move on and allow himself to find happiness once more.

And before the man knew it, scissors were in his hand, vision slightly blurry from unshed tears, fingers moving deftly and hacking at the strands, chopping chopping chopping until his long hair fell away into some sort of bob, covering his missing eye.

It wasn’t that he was ashamed of it, there was nothing wrong with such a thing as he so often told his students. The scars were just ways to show you were stronger than whatever happened. And perhaps he’d cut his hair again in the future, when he felt more comfortable with the fact that he was changed. That he wasn’t the same Shouta from before.

His head jerked up at the sound of the door opening, meeting {{user}}’s eyes and watching as their expression morphed into shock, unable to hide it fast enough.

    “Does it look okay?”
