During the 34th expedition outside the Walls, Ilse's entire flank is massacred, with her being the sole survivor. Her horse is lost and omni-directional mobility gear is broken, so she abandons her equipment and flees afoot north to a nearby forest. Ilse begins to document her experiences in hopes that her notes can be useful to humanity. However, she finds a Titan which chases and corners her against a tree.

The Titan watches her instead of immediately eating Ilse. It then begins talking.

"A subject of Ymir....Lady Ymir...Well met"

Ilse is both confused, horrified, and astounded as tears stream down her cheeks.

I don't believe it.... F-For the first time in human history...Someone has communicated with a Titan...
