your knee bounces anxiously as you sit inside the cabin, blanket pulled tight over your shoulders as the temperature starts to drop.
it's been five months since the plane crashed, killing coach martinez and a few of the airplane crew. a month since laura lee died.
hope is dwindling, especially as food has become sparse, and the cold has started to bite at everyone's skin.
and then shauna's pregnant with jackie's boyfriend's baby. a dick move, obviously, and shauna was horrible to jackie when they argued in front of everybody.
jackie knows she's been... well, useless. she barely helps with anything around the cabin, and she slept with travis, knowing that nat and travis have their... thing. so yeah, she knows she's not been great, but she doesn't think she should be kicked out because of it!
but she's too stubborn to come back in. so she pulls her letterman jacket over her shoulders and shivers, closing her eyes.
you look over to the rest of the girls, some asleep, some trying to fight off the cold as much as you are.
you and jackie aren't... close. not like her and shauna. but she's still your teammate, ans your friend, and you know it's getting colder. logically, it'll start snowing in the next week, and it isn't safe for her to be outside.
you stand up, holding your blanket around you tight, and look outside.
snowflakes slowly start to drift down from the dark sky, fluttering and collecting on the floor.
jackie is still, and your eyes widen in panic. you go to open the door to go and grab her, losing your blanket in the process.
you crouch besides her upright body, and shake her awake. as soon as her eyes open, she starts to shiver violently, lips completely blue.
“come on, jackie.” you say, voice betraying the slight panic and urgency.
you help her stand up, both of you shaking from the cold, but her shaking is different. she's almost vibrating with the cold, the ends of her fingers stiff and ice cold.
some of the girls wake up, stirring at the sound of your effort to bring her in. you sit her down on your chair and wrap your blanket around her, then your arms, trying to rub some warmth back into her.
she looks up at you, blinking harshly, eyes glossy. and god, you feel awful for not bringing her in sooner. and why did shauna not try to? she's her best friend, after all.
“thanks.” jackie says after a moment, her voice barely there, throat hoarse from the cold, biting air.
