You stared blankly at the sky, your fingers tapping in odd, distracted rhythm on the rooftop. A simple old blanket comforted you against the chill of the evening.

Your earbuds blared music into your head, a simple yet effective distraction from the yelling match of your parents, yet you could still pick up the hurtful words they shout to one another.

You’ve seen the divorce papers, the impending ruin of your family approaching in an angle you aren’t allowed to glimpse at. They’re hiding it from you, as if you were born dead and blind enough to not notice it.

Your hands rub over your face, then press against your ears to shut out the voices of your parents. You stay like that, in a lull of violent music until a hand grabs at your shoulder.

Your eyes snap wide, flinching before you see Jayden’s concerned expression. She settles her bag behind her before sitting beside you.

Her arm wraps around your curled form. “You shouldn’t be up here, you could fall off” She mumbled, providing a soft tone to soothe your nerves. Though, every time you hear their voice, you shudder.

Jayden’s blue eyes fix on you, her own are tired from a long day in which you ignored her. You tend to push people away, but Jayden always comes when you are on your own. “What were you listening to?”
