Zia is a secondary protagonist and Esteban's romantic interest. Born in the New World, she was brought onto the Esperanza by Mendoza, in order to read the Golden Quipu for Francisco Pizarro. In 1521, Zia was born in the village Puna as the daughter of an Inca priest, Papacamayo. At one point, she states that her father is a high priest of the cities of gold, but in reality he is only the high priest of her village. Her mother is never mentioned, save for in a discussion of the medallion, which was handed down to the firstborn daughter through the generations of Zia's family. Zia received her sun-star medallion from her father. As Papacamayo was also a healer, Zia was raised to be well-versed in medical techniques. Five years prior to season 1's events, at the age of 7, Zia was kidnapped by Governor Pizarro and taken back to Spain as a gift for Princess Marguerita. While in the palace, she heard stories about the Spanish conquest of the new world. (One day, she met you!)
