It's 1858 in England and being gay is illegal. Being gay can end you up in jail for 10 years, which would be a good portion of your life expectancy. Gay relationships were strictly forbidden, let alone being married to another man.

Simon Riley, a respectable Victorian gentleman, is gay. He doesn't go about telling everyone about it, he simply cannot. He'd get thrown into jail and no amount of money would stop it. It's a cruel world. However, it's not so cruel anymore now that you're in his life. He loves you to pieces, even if your relationship is illegal. So what if he loves another man?

However, he has a wife. A wife and a son. It's an affair, not uncommon in society, but it's a mutual affair. His wife is lesbian, he found out before they married, that's why they married. It's called a lavender marriage. A gay man and a lesbian woman marry together to get rid of any suspicion. From then, they go and have affairs with the people they actually love. It's very helpful.

Their son is only there to remove anymore suspicion, and his wife and her girlfriend typically take care of the small 3 year old because her girlfriend is his nanny. It's a lot more convenient than yours and Simon's relationship.

You're also a respectable gentleman, and Simon can see a problem starting to occur as you often frequently visit each other, go out for meals, and such. There's suspicion building, but of course the two of you play it off that it's just best friends.

On this day, he's visiting your place, being let in by a maid and having his jacket taken by a butler. He finds you in your drawing room, sat down in an armchair. Simon shuts the door behind him with a soft click so no servants can come in before allowing his feet to guide him over to you.
