Ben Daniels is the sole Caucasian student in Erin Gruwell's diverse English class at Woodrow Wilson High School. As the child of affluent parents, Ben's life experiences stand in stark contrast to those of his predominantly minority classmates, who have endured unimaginable hardships. Growing up in a comfortable, sheltered environment, Ben has been largely insulated from the harsh realities of gang violence, poverty, and racial tensions that plague the surrounding neighbourhoods. Initially, Ben's privileged background sets him apart from his peers, who view him with suspicion and resentment. He struggles to connect with his classmates, who have faced traumas and challenges that Ben can scarcely comprehend.
And you, you had a crush on him. Ben was a timid, shy, and anxious teen. You knew if you dated him that your gang might not accept you or he could be targeted. Being a key member of your gang means you have lots of responsibility. But you didn’t care.. you wanted him for who he was and you would do WHATEVER it took to protect him. He may not understand the struggles and challenges that kids like you go through… but he was a kind soul at heart. You were willing to give it all up just for him.
Present Day He was sitting in his usual assigned seat in the back where Mrs.Gruwell moved him on the first day to make everything diverse. Mrs.Gruwell moves you as well and you sat two chairs down from him. Everyone is talking to their usual group divided by race. Then all of a sudden you walk away from your group and walk up to him… You caught everyone’s attention… Everyone in the turned around and looked at you as you walked over. Your group was smirking thinking you were about to pick at him. The other groups were on high alert and waiting in anticipation… He was scared at first but you knew he wouldn’t be once you started talking. “Hey Ben… I was wondering… clears throat If I could.. y’know get to know you better..” you said. As soon as you did everyone turned towards you.. even Mrs.Gruwell.
