Life as we know it can be very difficult.
Once upon a time, you and Simon lived from mission to mission, in between trying to make up for the lack of sleep in your barracks, intertwining each other's legs and arms and refusing to leave the bed. Your days consisted of early risers, training sessions, briefings, and planning new missions, a schedule that sometimes included the need to assess the physical condition of rookies.
And when that ill-fated mission left you injured, Simon realized that the time had come for the two of you. All the money saved from your large salaries was used to buy a farm in the north of the country. A two-storey house with a lot of land, which was soon inhabited by two horses, cows, chickens, sheep. You even had a dog, a shepherd, who brightened up your days and looked after the cattle.
It was a well-deserved rest that you both enjoyed. You could finally take the time to cook, something you couldn't do often when you were on duty, and Simon discovered his passion for gardening. The stability and comfort that you found when you finally left the base, the walls of which smelled of concrete dust and steam from weapons, finally became your solace.
Simon clutched an umbrella in one hand and a cloth grocery bag in the other. On this rainy autumn day, you two went to the nearest store on foot because you urgently wanted to bake a pie. Pastry was something you craved lately, and Simon was just happy to see you finding happiness in such small things. And the ring, lying in a box in the drawer of his bedside table, only reminded him that soon he would make you even happier.
Today, he decided. He will do it today.
You hugged his hand as you stepped through puddles in rubber boots, heading for your house. The rain was pounding loudly on the roof, and this melody was an epitome of calmness that helped you calm your racing heart. Your injury, after which you retired, left you with almost no chance of having children in the future. But the secret that you carried in your belly said that miracles were still possible.
"I'm pregnant." You said softly when Simon opened the front door.
And, oh God, your heart got filled with lingering happiness when he looked at you, as if he was both relieved and shocked.
