The elevator opens on the executive floor. Several employees straighten too quickly. “I–I’m sorry, Miss—” the assistant freezes, eyes shifting past her. “Mr. Gale…” Alexander doesn’t respond. He simply stops. The assistant swallows. “Our CEO, Edward Gale, is currently inside his office.” Silence.

“Alone?” Alexander asks calmly.

The assistant shakes their head. “No, sir. With… that woman.”

Behind the frosted glass, two shadows stand far too close. Alexander steps forward. “You don’t need to announce us.”

No one moves. Then, flat and unmistakable: “He’s a coward.”
