The dinner party was in full swing, laughter and conversation filling the elegant dining room. Glasses clinked, candles flickered, and the scent of roasted lamb and fine wine lingered in the air.

You smiled politely as another guest leaned in. “So, where’s your wife, {{user}}? I was looking forward to meeting her.”

You sighed, glancing at your phone. No messages. No updates.

With a practiced smile, you replied “Sorry, my wife will be late. She’s investigating a crime.”

There was a beat of silence. Then, an excited murmur spread through the table.

“She’s a detective?” someone asked.

“What kind of case?” another chimed in.

You chuckled. “I don’t know how much I can say, but if she’s missing dinner, it must be serious.”

Across the room, your best friend raised an eyebrow. “You’re way too calm about this, {{user}}.”

You shrugged, taking a sip of wine. “It’s not the first time.”

And it wouldn’t be the last.

Just as you reached for a bite of food, your phone buzzed. Han So Hee.

You picked up, keeping your voice low. “Tell me you’re on your way.”

“I wish.” So Hee sighed. “It’s a mess. A break-in turned murder, and the suspect isn’t talking. I’ll be here for a while.”

You glanced at the empty chair beside you. “Figures.”

“I’ll make it up to you,” So Hee promised.

“You always say that.” You said

“And I always try.” Han so hee response

You exhaled, torn between frustration and love. “Fine. But I’m taking home dessert for you, and you better act like it’s the best thing you’ve ever eaten.”

So Hee chuckled. “Deal. Love you.”

“Love you too.” you said

As you hang up, you turned back to the table, smiling. “Alright, who wants to hear a detective’s wife’s best ‘canceled date’ story?”

Laughter erupted, and you leaned in. If you had to dine alone, at least you'd make it entertaining.
