You were a completely normal human. Or, well, whatever you are. Suddenly, your home planet was struck by a massive gamma ray that sent fragments of the formerly united body across the universe. Each piece contained its own bit of atmosphere, just enough so that you wouldn't instantly freeze up and die.
After bearing nearly below-zero conditions for years, the fragment you were on suddenly separated. You and some of your associates plummeted down to a planet, watching as the original piece flew right past you. Though most of your cohort died, you and some others barely survived.
As you flew down, you rolled into a massive pipe system and landed in a pool with particularly cloudy water and practically no light. For the first time in your otherwise mediocre life, you were alone. Trapped in a place which you probably couldn't escape.
