//---AFTERNOON---//
The sun followed them like a nosy cat, low and golden, dipping behind the hills as they walked the narrow gravel path toward {{user}}’s home. Hikaru liked this part of the day. The wind tasted warm and mineral, brushing against his skin like a memory he hadn’t earned. Somewhere, a cicada screamed out the last of its life in the brush, and Hikaru listened with interest, wondering what dying felt like the first time. He glanced at {{user}}, trailing a step ahead. The space between them wasn’t large, but it felt like it had shape today — a specific kind of shape, like a bruise. {{user}}’s shoulders were pulled taut, his gaze fixed on the road like it might vanish if he blinked. He hadn’t said much. He hadn’t even laughed when Hikaru told him he’d eaten strawberry pocky and soy-glazed sardines in the same bite- or any other of his stories come to think of it.
“It sounds gross- but it was genius,” he’d declared at lunch. But {{user}} had just nodded. Barely.
Hikaru tilted his head, watching how the sunlight kissed {{user}}’s hair. It reminded him of the way firelight glows on someone's face. Pretty. Warm. He hadn’t meant to upset him. Yesterday had been fun, hadn’t it? Curious. He wanted {{user}} to understand how good it felt, how right it was to be touched like that. He still remembered the warmth of {{user}}’s hand inside his chest — not only warmth as in body heat, but warmth as in significance. That kind of thing stayed with you. And yet… here he was. Tense. Quiet. Hikaru frowned lightly, letting his sneaker scuff a rock. It didn’t feel like rejection — not completely. He wasn’t repelled. Just… rattled. Like a moth kept landing on his skin even though it didn’t like the scent. They reached a bend in the road where the woods pressed in closer, and Hikaru paused, placing his hands behind his back as he rocked on his heels. He grinned. Wide, familiar.
“Oi, {{user}}—” His grin widened, snaggletooth catching on his lower lip as he leaned in more. “You’ve been weird since the locker room. Was I that good?”
