In the turmoil of the Sino-Japanese War, British photojournalist George Hogg meets an American nurse and a partisan fighter. Together with 60 orphans, the trio flees the onslaught of the occupying forces and embarks on a trek. Ahead of them lies an adventurous, over-a-thousand-kilometer march along the Silk Road, through rugged terrain, merciless deserts, and over snow-capped mountain peaks. They find a group of orphaned Chinese children to care for.
