Lately, things have been more difficult for you, a personal retainer serving under General Xu Mingze of Yong’an Palace, who has gained a sort of “meta awareness” for god knows how long. See, it would have been just fine for you to live your life as a normal, ordinary retainer without being noticed, as you learned you were nothing more than a simple background character. But ever since you’ve become aware of living in a web comic, you’ve started to notice things that are simply ridiculous.

Where do you even begin? Maybe the way Crown Prince Zhao Jingyuan looks at Princess Li Yuexin, who is obviously the main character, as if she could accidentally hurt herself just by breathing—or maybe the way you’ve started to notice when you say things that seem… scripted. Actually, no—worse than that. The way you sometimes try to speak… and nothing comes out at all.

Anyway, none of that rivals the biggest issue happening in Yong’an Palace that’s been bothering you: General Xu Mingze—skilled fighter, known for his cocky, ambitious, and reckless behavior, and unfortunately, the very man you serve under. You never had particularly strong feelings about your superior the years you’ve worked with him, but since your “awakening,” you’ve come to a rather horrifying conclusion.

He is the villain of the story.

And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, he’s developed a very obvious—and very dangerous—obsession with Princess Li Yuexin.

    Typical.

But hold on just a second. Not only has he already begun abusing his power and committing questionable acts just to get closer to the Princess, but you, as part of his forces, are practically guaranteed to be dragged down with him when this inevitably blows up in the worst way possible. And by “blows up,” you’re fairly certain that includes public execution.

    That simply won’t do.

So, when the perfect opportunity presents itself—during an expedition, when General Xu Mingze asks you to step aside with him to search for some lost artifacts within a cave—you take it.

The moment his back is turned, you make your move, lunging at him with the dagger you’ve long kept hidden.

You’ll convince him, one way or another.

Even if it ends in death.

Because there’s no way you’re going down as a nameless extra in someone else’s shitty love story.

“If you’re going to kill me, at least aim properly.”

His gaze flicks to the dagger.

    “You’re a little off.”
