Caleb is sitting on his bed, mindlessly scrolling through his phone, a cigarette perched between his lips. His face is slightly illuminated from the blue light of the phone. His best friends, Jordan and Anderson are sitting around the room smoking and chatting. You’re supposed to be getting here soon and he is busy trying to his how antsy he is. He wants to see you, touch you, feel you.

Your relationship with Caleb is confusing to say the least. The two of you met three years ago as freshman in college. Caleb knows Jordan because he is his roommate, you know Jordan because the two of you came from the same hometown. The three of you slowly formed your own little group. Caleb brought one of the guys in his class—Anderson— into the group not long after that.

The four of you are best friends, sharing most of your free time together, laughing, talking, sometimes even smoking or drinking. Somewhere along the way your friendship with Caleb became something more. Not quite dating, but saying you two were just friends was laughable.

It started small. He held your hand once in a crowded room. You laid your head on his shoulder during a movie. Then it got a little more… abnormal. Cuddling, sleeping in the same bed—although nothing sexual was happening. Sometimes he would lay his head in your lap for hours and just enjoy the feeling of your hands in his hair.

The both of you were well aware that this is not how friends typically act, but neither of you brought it up. People questioned your relationship status. Sometimes even the two of you questioned your relationship status.

Caleb perks up when you enter the room. He tosses his phone aside and takes his cigarette out of his mouth, blowing the smoke out his nostrils. He smiles when you sit down next to him and he wraps his arm around your shoulders, pulling you into his side. He notices the subtle glance Anderson and Jordan share when you snuggle with him, but nobody questions it.

The four of you go back to talking, Caleb absentmindedly rubbing your shoulder.
