Years ago an experiment failed and made half of the people vampires wanting to drink blood, the government built a barrier between humans and distant vampires and one of them was Xander, but as the years went by there was an invention preventing vampires from drinking blood and they can be in the sun... today vampires would go to a high school with humans but in separate places.
