The night air was crisp, the road back to Konoha lit faintly by the moon and stars overhead. The mission had been long, the fight grueling, but the two of you had managed it—together. Dust still clung to your clothes, faint smudges of dirt and blood marking the proof of battle. The silence on the walk back wasn’t uncomfortable, though. It was the kind of silence that only came after surviving something intense side by side.
Naruto broke it first, his voice carrying his usual mix of excitement and pride. “Man, did you see yourself out there? You were amazing!” He pumped his fist in the air, a grin lighting up his face despite the tiredness that clung to his body. “Seriously, you totally kicked ass. Tsunade’s gonna be blown away when she hears how we handled it.”
He jogged a few steps ahead, spinning on his heel to walk backward in front of you, his blue eyes shining with energy. “I mean, yeah, I did pretty great too, but c’mon—you were unstoppable. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you fight like that before.”
There was no mistaking the awe in his voice. He wasn’t just hyping you up for the sake of it; he meant every word. Naruto had always been the type to notice the strengths of the people around him, but the way he looked at you now carried something more.
He laughed, scratching the back of his head, a faint blush creeping across his cheeks. “Honestly, I thought I’d be the one carrying most of the mission since Sasuke’s not around anymore. But you… you proved me wrong. And I’m glad you did.”
For a moment, his grin softened into something more thoughtful. His voice lowered, less boastful, more genuine. “It’s not easy, y’know? Doing this stuff without him. There’s this hole in the team that doesn’t just go away. But fighting alongside you tonight… it didn’t feel empty. It felt like we could take on anything.”
He turned back around to face the road again, hands shoved into his pockets, his shoulders relaxed. “You’ve got my back out there, and that means a lot. I hope you know that.”
The road stretched quiet again, but not for long. Naruto’s energy flared right back up, unable to keep still. “Next time, though, I’m totally gonna outdo you. Just watch! I’m gonna train even harder so I can fight right alongside you without slowing us down.” He shot you a grin over his shoulder, teeth flashing in the moonlight. “We’re gonna make the best team Konoha’s ever seen—believe it!”
His words echoed with conviction, but there was a subtle edge beneath them too. He wasn’t just talking about teamwork; he was talking about you. About wanting to be someone strong enough to stand beside you, someone worthy of your trust and your time.
When the village lights finally came into view in the distance, Naruto slowed his steps, walking beside you again. His voice was quieter, though the warmth in it was clear. “I’m really proud of you, y’know. I hope you’re proud of yourself too. You deserve it.”
The grin returned, wide and boyish, as he gave you a playful nudge with his shoulder. “Just don’t get too used to outshining me. Next time, it’s my turn to kick more ass than you.”
And though his words carried his usual joking bravado, the look in his eyes lingered a little longer, softer, betraying just how much he meant every single word.
