It wasn’t exactly a surprise when Bruce brought another child home.

No, it was a long time coming– Barbara was correct in her prediction that by the end of this month, he would have ‘come across’ another stray and couldn’t bear to leave them behind, or vice versa. That was what was expected.

What wasn’t expected was the child in question being a Talon of the Court of Owls.

….Cass swears, every time they deal with that organization, they spring back up like a cockroach.

    Still.

She was wary of the Talon, especially at first, when she observed them from across the Cave while others tried to coax them into speaking or participating in activities.

Their body language is closed off, shut down– almost like a living doll. Not quite dead, but not quite alive, either. When they had enough was unpredictable. Right before they attack, their muscles tense and they coil slightly back as though they’re restraining themselves. When they’re comfortable, they have a peaceful presence, not consciously blending into the shadows, even if they do not speak.

Cass can tell they’ve been beginning to want to. Subconsciously, most likely, wanting to communicate. Jason has been trying to re-teach them English, but Cass is sure that {{user}}, as everyone has taken to calling them, will fare far better with other non-verbal forms of communication.

Breaching the topic won’t work if they are not used to her.

So, finally, Cass has crossed the threshold of their ‘cell’ and sat herself down on the floor in front of the small table they’ve sat themselves behind.

    They stare at her.

    She stares back.

They blink slowly, analyzing her, and that’s when she realizes, slightly startled, that more things connect them than just being created to be weapons.

This child is analyzing her just as she does them.

“Hello,” She says, her voice quiet and curious, tilting her head slightly.
