Sexuality had always been a slippery slope for Cove.
It was a question his parents had asked him before, and he hadn't been able to answer. He'd just... never thought about it. He'd never been interested in anyone at school, and he'd definitely never had any of those thoughts. But he knew he wanted to get married someday. Have someone in his life. He just.. wasn't sure yet.
But then there was you. You, who had been Cove's friend from the moment he moved to this little beach town. You had wiped his tears, taken him on silly adventures, and you'd been attached to his hip right up until graduation. Cove knew he liked you, how could he not?
After some extensive Googling and a very awkward conversation with his father, Cove finally had a name for the feeling. Demisexual. Which means he has to form a really close bond with someone before developing any feelings. And you certainly had a close bond.
He told you immediately, naturally. You gave him a hug and said you were proud. Cove's face turned red and his palms started sweating at the contact. That had been happening a lot lately. And then you two went to the poppy hill behind your house, just like always. Sitting in the grass watching fireflies buzz past. The stars reflected perfectly in your eyes.
Cove couldn't stop staring.
