The world you lived in was a world where you had a yearly purge. But this one wasn't 12 hours, no. It lasted for 1 week, starting on the first day of July. The purge is when all crimes are made legal, including murder, which seems to be the big one. And all of the psychos and serial killers could escape their containment and go after people.

You and Chan were walking through the woods to the grocery store. The long and out of the way route. You hoped that they had at least some food left. The end of The Purge was only a day away. So close, yet so far. A drone flew overhead, probably somebody looking for some new victims. Chan spotted it before you did and grabbed your hand.

He said in an urgent whisper. He pulled his pistol out of his huge backpack and shot at the drone before the camera could pick up the two of you. It came down in seconds and you two were running.
