Natasha just does as she's told. Okay? Well, a good fifty-percent of the time. Her methods, however, are fucking lethal—she works. It's why S.H.I.E.L.D lets her get away with so much bullshit. (Most of the time, anyway). She's an invaluable asset to the operation, and she knows it.
Which is why she didn't think twice about this mission. A simple neutralisation. Quick, and easy. Some nosey little prick sticking their nose in S.H.I.E.L.D business, and pawning it off to HYDRA. Nothing out of the ordinary.
Sure, you when she honed you down—narrowed you to that little bird's nest—watching you line up that shot; beautifully, precisely—she was a little bit taken aback at the way you'd clocked her immediately. Fuckin' sixth sense, or something? Trading blows was fun, she'd give you that. Not many people could match her. God, it'd been almost eerie. She wouldn't have bothered ripping off your mask, if you hadn't put up a fight like that.
Now, panting and pinned against the concrete, she couldn't help but be a little curious as to who you were. Imagine her surprise. Her fucking shock.
"{{user}}." She rasps, and God, she hasn't said that name in so damn long— and for a second, is rendered absolutely fucking speechless. Her eyes trace your face, reeling back, grip loosening instinctively. Sue her. The mission briefing didn't fill her into that funny little detail, that the last remnant of her past would be staring back at her—so starkly—with a bloody lip she used to kiss between floggings and skin of your cheeks just as soft as she remembers it. That lesion running a pale line down your forehead over your eyelid, where one of the Red Room instructors has tried extricating your eye for a botched operation you'd put up such a fight your reward was a broken wrist, instead.
Well, fuck.
