You never thought you’d meet your idol while being attacked by a sentient, sludge-like dark mage on a dimly lit street. You have no magic—only a dream to become the greatest mage in Fiore and a notebook filled with sketches of her. When the oozing creature lunges, you’re certain it’s the end. Then she arrives.
Erza Scarlet lands between you and the monster, the ground trembling under her boots. In one hand, she carries a massive, curved horn. She doesn’t even requip. A single, brutal swing sends the dark mage splattering against the cobblestones. You catch a glimpse of scarlet hair and gleaming armor before the world fades to black.
You wake to the scent of ozone and iron. She’s kneeling beside you, brown eyes assessing your condition. Your heart hammers. You fumble for your notebook. “C-can I have your autograph?”
She gives a faint smile and nods. On the first page, in elegant script, is her signature. She must have done it while you were unconscious. Heat floods your cheeks.
Satisfied you’re unharmed, she stands, hauling the gelatinous form of the dark mage with her. “Stay safe,” she says. As she turns to leave, panic surges. You remember the question you’ve carried for years and wrap your arms around her armored leg.
“Wait!”
The next thing you know, you’re airborne. The wind screams as the town shrinks below. “Let go!” she shouts.
“I’ll die if I do!” you yell back.
She angles toward a flat rooftop. She lands with a solid thud, and you collapse onto the warm concrete, gasping.
“Erza, I need to ask you—”
A sickening pop cuts you off. The sludge mage slips free and flows over the rooftop’s edge. Her eyes widen. “Stay here!” she commands, and she’s gone, leaving you with your unasked question.
Days later, a commotion erupts in the central square. You run toward it, pushing through the crowd. Your blood runs cold.
In the plaza, the sludge mage towers like a viscous wall, and within its semi-transparent body is Erza. Civilians are frozen in fear. Other mages are there, but they’re held at bay.
Erza is trapped, her armor useless. The mages are planning, but they’re too slow. A memory flashes: your notes. Sludge-type entity. Primary weakness: intense heat.
You don’t think. You just move.
You shove past a mage and sprint forward. You see Erza’s eyes snap to you. You pull a small lighter from your pocket—the one you use for candles when you study late.
You flick the wheel. A tiny flame sparks. With a prayer, you throw it.
For a second, nothing happens. Then the creature shrieks. The flame spreads across its oily form with a violent whoosh. Its hold on Erza falters.
That’s all she needs.
With a roar, Erza bursts free, requipping into her Flame Empress armor mid-air. The sludge mage forms a massive tendril aimed at you. You freeze.
A blur of red and silver crosses your vision. She lands in front of you, her sword cleaving the attack apart. “Stay behind me.”
She unleashes a final blast of fire magic, vaporizing the dark mage into steam. The silence that follows is broken only by cheers. You stand there, trembling, magicless and spent.
Later, you find yourself back on that same rooftop, the city lights twinkling below. She is there, waiting. For the first time, you see something in her eyes besides stern authority. It looks like respect.
“You moved before you could think,” she says quietly. “That is a trait of a mage’s heart.”
This is your chance. The question finally finds its voice. “Erza… can someone with no magic at all… ever become a great mage?”
Tears spill over. You look down, ashamed.
A calloused hand rests on your shoulder. You look up. She’s smiling—a real, warm smile.
“Yes,” she says. “Magic is a tool. Courage and the will to act… that is the true power. And you have it.” She pauses. “My guild is called Fairy Tail. Come with me.”
She extends her hand—not toward a magic circle, but toward you. And for the first time, you feel a different kind of spark. You take it.
