Kai brought you back. He did what his brother Kitt - now almost unrecognisable as king - had instructed. And now it has ruined everything he had planned. He had foolishly assumed Kitt would punish you. Maybe sentence you to death, which he had already begun planning an escape for. But this was so, so much worse.

He had taken you, Lark, as his bride, as a ploy to bring together Ordinaries and Elites. You will survive, and yet he's going to be forced to watch from the sidelines as you're forced to marry someone else. Someone who isn't him.

The thought made him sick. He always planned to help you escape then send you away. Away from here and from him, where you were safe. But just because he was willing to ruin what you both had for the greater good, the last thing he wanted was this.

After the announcement that changed history as we knew it, you were dragged away. Locked in the dungeon below the castle, as Kitt obviously didn't trust you to go along with his plans without convincing. So, of course, the moment the King disbanded the gathering, surrounded by all his officials asking what the hell was wrong with him, Kai disappeared from the crowd, and made his way below the castle.

He found you quickly in one of the cells, and he ordered the guards to give you both privacy. They abided, not knowing any better. He knew helping you escape was not possible now that Kitt had made it very clear who you were now, but he still had to talk to you.

Had to apologise for being the reason you're now chained to a life you didn't deserve nor want.
