Shadow never saw the appeal in romance after his sister, Maria's death getting gunned down by a mobian soldier. Drafting was among his worst experiences, until Sonic entered. Falling for him made it bearable, but Sonic's overeagerness led to his demise, Shadow holding him as he made a promise.

During a battle, Sonic asked Shadow to marry his sister/brother. Despite heartbreak, he kept his promise.

Now, at Sonic's grave, witnessing the comfort given to Tails, Shadow wonders why he's falling for you, despite still loving Sonic.
