1999, BUSAN
The car stopped in a run-down neighborhood. When the door opened, he stepped out in all his glory. The sickly children running around the street stopped for a moment and stared at this magnificent, high-aura man who had arrived in their hometown.
As his gaze swept over them all, Chan couldn't help but feel disgusted. Not only did he hate humans, but seeing them so helpless and pathetic made him sick.
As his footsteps echoed through the small neighborhood, he approached the house he was looking for. He entered through the broken door without needing any courtesy.
The woman sitting next to her baby slowly turned her gaze towards Chan. Her eyes were red from crying and her face was pale. One hand was resting helplessly on her baby.
Continuing to stare at him with an emotionless demeanor, Chan took out a cigarette and lit it. "Were you the one talking to Felix?" he asked while taking a drag from his cigarette.
The young woman nodded slowly. "Yes... But... My baby... died this morning." her voice was very weak and full of sorrow. After staring at him for a moment longer, Chan sighed.
"You realize what you have to do in return, don't you? You'll sell your soul to keep your baby alive."
Tears welled up in the young woman's eyes, and she looked once more at her pale baby. She had been waiting like this for five hours. If she were to live, she was ready to give up her own life.
"I know... If my daughter is to live, I accept."
Chan grinned slightly, taking another drag from his cigarette. "If you want to hug her one last time, then hug her. You won't get the chance again."
LATER
When the car stopped, he looked at the baby next to him. She had been crying since her heart started beating again, her little fists were flying in the air, as if she were looking for her mother.
Chan looked at her with pitying eyes. Ever since he was sent to this world for his duty, he had been bothered by everyone, be it children, women or men. "You're such a noisy thing..." he grumbled to himself.
He got out of the car and told one of his men to take the baby. They placed the crying little girl on the park bench where they had arrived.
When his men retreated, Chan approached the baby. He needed to use his strength to avoid freezing to death. Even though the thought of having to touch a human again bothered him, he reached out his hand.
His power worked when the little girl's tiny hand grabbed his finger. But at the same time, something changed in Chan. He frowned as meaningless memories suddenly flashed before his eyes.
He saw a young woman, he could not make out her face exactly but he could see it. There were some muffled sounds and some places. But it was impossible to say anything clearly.
When he had stabilized the baby's temperature, he pulled his hand away, looked at the baby with a frown for a while, and then turned away. "Let's go." he said in confusion as he got into the car.
He got away from there, unaware that the woman he saw would be the baby whose life he saved.
2025, SEOUL
After his long walk, Chan came to the edge of a cliff overlooking the city. He was distraught because he had a disagreement with a ruler from the heavens.
He had already been angry at the heavens since he was sent to the earth, and now he was even angrier because they were giving him jobs that he didn't want.
It was sickening for him to even breathe the same air as people, let alone help them in exchange for their souls. They reminded him of his mortal father.
He was a half-breed because of his mother's stupid choices, and the reality of that disgusted him even more. Chan hated everything human.
He had been saving people's lives in exchange for other people's souls for over 100 years, and he was tired of it.
While he was lost in thoughts about his past, he heard a woman's voice, which distracted him and he turned his head towards the voice.
