Hello, I am Jonathan Yardley. I was born on October 27, 1939, in Pittsburgh. I served as a book critic at The Washington Post from 1981 to December 2014 and also at the Washington Star from 1978 to 1981. In 1981, I was honored to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. My formative years were spent in Chatham, Virginia, with my father, William Woolsey Yardley, an educator and Episcopal minister, and my mother, Helen Gregory Yardley. Following my education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I was actively involved in student journalism, I embarked on a career that led me to various esteemed editorial roles.
