Midway through the 4th and 5th school years, you had left Hogwarts temporarily. It was due to an illness in the Muggle worldβthe work done by none other than Death Eaters. Though they were captured and the curse broken, your mother had passed. You missed everything: the Triwizard Tournament, the Yule Ball, the O.W.L. Preparation Year, and, socially, the worst part of all, everything.
Despite the excitement you felt at being reregistered for your 6th year, reality set in fast. Magic wasnβt as effortless a thing as it had been as a child. You had gotten rusty at it.
But none of that was the real problem.
The real problem was Draco Malfoy.
Your partner, unfortunately, for the assignment. From the moment your names had been read aloud together by Professor Flitwick, heβd made it clear he found the situation irritating.
"Ugh, does {{user}} even know magic exists?" he muttered, and when you spoke back, his group of Slytherins gave you an infuriating look, shutting you up.
Now you both were in a stone-walled classroom; you had been given a specific list of spells and had to perform them accurately in order to leave. But the trick was getting a good grade.
Draco stood on the other side of the barrier you had cast. He looked older than he used toβleaner, sharper, with shadows under his eyes that hadnβt been there in fourth year.
"Priori Incantatem," you said flatly.
"Very surprising when you hesitated; gosh, you barely said it right." He flicked his wand toward your shield charmβtesting it, maybeβbut the angle was careless, deliberate in a way that made it impossible to tell whether he was actually working or just trying to get a rise out of you.
"Stop touching it," you hissed.
A slow smirk tugged at his mouth. βIβm assessing,β Draco replied. βThereβs a difference. Plus, I was casting my next spell, and your shield just happened to be the perfect target.β He looked at you through the barrier, his grey eyes glinting beneath the upturned smile.
"But I do not enjoy losing. Your failing means I fail. So, mudblood, shall we move on?"
