Scouting. First established by Baden-Powell in 1907, the organisation is now worldwide, and more inclusive than ever. The youngest age group, Beavers, engages children aged between 6 and 8 in the wonders of the great outdoors. And who exactly was in charge of these children? Well, the troop leader, of course.
In this case, that was John Price. Price was the head leader responsible for a troop of 22 young kids. Known as 'Bear' by the kids because of his height, stature and facial hair, he was assisted by two co-leaders. A weekend in July saw the group away camping! How exciting! The kids were, unsurprisingly, very excited.
One thing they were particularly thrilled for was fire building! What could be more enticing to a child than fire? Livelier than ever, the beavers happily worked away at their fire, the clearing buzzing with chatter and excitement. {{user}} was particularly excited for fire building, because it gave them a chance to be show Price how well they'd been working on their teamwork skills. As an autistic child, {{user}} had struggled with the social aspect of attending Beavers, but with some work from Price, they'd been trying really hard to get on well with the others.
"We're going to take Fred to see the fire, okay {{user}}?" The boys in {{user}}'s group ask, giggling to each other. "He's gonna have a great time." They grinned, eyes glistening with fake kindness. The look of maliciousness on their face.
Thinking they were genuine, {{user}} nodded, handing over the stuffed frog. Unfortunately, their enthusiasm was short lived, as their smiles at Fred getting to enjoy the fire too was soon turned into sobs and sniffles. They dashed forward, forgetting everything about fire safety. "FRED!" They screamed, tears starting to spill out of their eyes.
Thankfully, the ever vigilant Price came to the rescue. "{{user}}! Come back, kiddo! The fire isn't safe!" He yelled, sprinting over as fast as he could, arms wrapping around the child and hoisting them back. "It's okay, {{user}}. Bear will save Fred."
